Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Endoscopic sinus surgery, a minimally invasive outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia, applies an endoscope to treat sinus problems like nasal polyps, tumors, and chronic infections, with minor post-surgery symptoms like bleeding, pain, and congestion typically resolving within one to three weeks.

What is Endoscopic Sinus Surgery?

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a procedure performed to remove blockages and treat other sinus problems using an endoscope, a thin, rigid tube with an attached camera and light. The surgery is completely safe, performed through the nostrils, and does not result in facial scars or changes to the external shape of the nose. Studies have shown that 80 to 90 percent of patients who undergo this surgery experience successful resolution of their sinus issues.

Major symptoms of Sinuses include:

Pain and pressure above the eyes, along the sides of the nose, and behind the cheeks

Green or yellow mucus draining from the nose

Feeling congested

Fever

Difficulty sleeping due to congestion

Pain in the nose or throat

Frequent sneezing

Nasal polyps causing obstruction

Recurrent sinus infections not responding to treatment Procedure Details

Prepartory Stage: Prior to surgery, medical consultant may give patient specific instructions like quit smoking at least three weeks before the surgery to avoid worsening sinus symptoms. He/she may ask patient to avoid aspirin for at least 10 days before surgery to prevent excessive bleeding. The consultant may also ask you if undergoing general anesthesia, do not eat or drink after midnight before the procedure. Anesthesia will be given just before surgery.

Operative Stage: The procedure is performed under general or local anesthesia. An endoscope is inserted through the nostrils to provide a clear view of the sinuses. Using specialized surgical instruments, blockages such as polyps, infected tissue, or bone are removed to clear the sinus pathways. The entire surgery usually takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of the case.

Postoperative Care

Patient may experience a mild discomfort, nasal congestion, and some bleeding which are common after surgery.

The doctor will give the patient a nasal saline spray and ask use it to mist spray every two to three hours after surgery to keep the nose comfortable and moisturized.

Patients should avoid strenuous activities, nose blowing, and exposure to allergens or irritants for several weeks to promote proper recovery.

Follow-up visits are essential to monitor healing and ensure the sinuses remain open.

•    Fever over 101°F

•    Persistent clear nasal discharge
